Cinco De Mayo

May 5, 2009

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "5th of May") is a Mexican holiday that honors Mexico's unlikely victory over the French army at the Battle of Puebla on MAY 5, 1862 - take that Frenchies!

I must confess I had never heard of no Cinco de Mayo prior to moving to the states. Tucked away in my little slice of Australia, I knew close to nothing about Mexican culture, food and people. One of the side perks of the move to DC is the proximity to this new and untapped culture and what I have seen, tasted and experienced so far (piggy flu aside) I like, I like a lot.

So I am more than willing to celebrate this Mexican holiday tomorrow. I do not promise there will be piƱatas or Mariachis but thanks to the blissful two weeks spent in Mexico recently, there will be Cerveza (beer, Mexican of course, brand of choice Pacifico) and Reposado Tequila. Big Roo took particular joy in his self appointed task whilst in Mexico to try as many brands and varieties of Tequila before deciding which ones to buy and bring home with us. To give you a sense of his obsession, upon our return Little Roo would shake salt on a wedge of lime and then proceed to squeeze the lime into her mouth before her water shooter......responsible parenting.

Feliz Cinco De Mayo!
