Cheap Family Eats in Canberra: BYOBBQ at Lonsdale Street Roasters

Jan 23, 2015

My favourite Canberra coffee shop Lonsdale Street Roasters  does a little moonlighting in the evenings as Lonsdale Street Eatery from Thursday – Sundays serving up BYOBBQ, their take on American BBQ. They provide the BBQ, you provide the drinks.

The mood and setting is relaxed with plenty of outdoor seating, everybody eats with their hands and drinks out of plastic cups. Perfect setting for a laid back summer family dinner in my books!

Lonsdale Street Eatery have imported a barbecue pit from the states and you can taste (and smell) the wood smoke in the meat.
It is a simple casual affair with a mix of eclectic tables and chairs available inside and in their two outdoor areas (one in the front of the eatery and one in the rear). Each table is set simply with two bottles of sauce which I assumed to be mustard and ketchup but we didn’t use either. All the ordering is done at the front window for food, soft drinks, juice and coffee with all other drinks BYO. Plastic cups are dispensed from the ordering window for the BYO drinks and they have a small charge for a bucket of ice for those that want to keep beverages cold.

Tweeny, the husband and I went in for an early Saturday night dinner.  Sitting outside on a balmy summer night, beer and cider seemed a popular choice purchased from the bottle shop next door at the nearby tables but we had a bottle of red wine at home that we bought to accompany our BBQ.
The tasting platter for two (in our case three) I thought was good value at $39, stacked with ribs, beef brisket and pulled pork shoulder, served with dill pickles, coleslaw and white bread. Because we are a little greedy, we also ordered an extra side of pork ribs and a potato salad.

It is a great place to take little (and big) carnivores who like to eat with their hands. I have my eye on the BBQ Chicken for our next visit, the dish looked and smelled amazing.
