Salamanca Wharf Hotel: luxe accommodation in the heart of Hobart

Feb 23, 2015

I love travel but one of the things that stresses me out a little when planning a vacation is where to stay while away. So many choices and options to consider! If you get it wrong it can taint your holiday experience but when you get it right, it feels pretty incredible.

I was feeling pretty incredible the minute my party of three (the husband, Tweeny and I) stepped into our accommodation at Salamanca Wharf Hotel in Hobart, Tasmania.

The trip did not start off entirely well. We had a two hour delay on the ground at Hobart airport waiting for an available rental car, even though we had prebooked and paid for it in advance. I had my cranky pants on when we were finally on the road and I answered a phone call from the receptionist at Salamanca Wharf Hotel. As soon a she identified herself, I thought “great, something else to derail the start of our Hobart trip” but no she just wanted to check what time we would be arriving as reception was closing in an hour and she wanted to hand over instructions for a smooth check in. Oh, how nice! I have stayed in a lot of different hotels and NONE have ever called me to make sure I have a smooth check in experience. I was starting to feel much better about the trip.

LOCATION

As we were driving the short 20 minutes from the airport to the hotel, we passed the outskirts of Hobart city centre and followed the Derwent River which led us to our destination.
Getting out of the car we looked up and were met with a most pleasing skyline of the modern Salamanca Wharf Hotel elegantly sandwiched between two historic sandstone buildings.

Over the two nights we spent at the hotel we made full use of the picturesque location by going out on evening strolls in search of dinner and pretty sunsets. Being right on Battery Point, the hotel was in  prime position for access to Princes Park, the Derwent River and Hobart Harbour and allowed us to easily explore the restaurants, cafes, shops and galleries around Salamanca Place.  It was right near the action but just out of earshot of all of it.

THE HOTEL

Super modern and new it oozes urban charm with a small slick reception area, white interiors and a very nifty car stacker to park in with a bonus of free wi-fi for all guests.

THE ROOM

It was so much more than a hotel room, we stayed in a one bedroom Premium Apartment which was packed with comfortable thoughtful features and a luxury contemporary fit out.

We flung open the door to find a long corridor with polished timber floors which we followed to our very comfortable separate kitchen, dining and living area. The enormous floor to ceiling windows at the end of the room slide open providing an alfresco feel to the room and our view peeked out to Princes Park.

As we tend to start the day quietly, preferring to self cater and eat breakfast in our accommodation, I made use of the kitchen which was fully equipped with Smeg appliances. The minibar fridge was stocked with local Tasmanian goodies and most importantly for a caffeine addict like me had a plunger and a bag of ground coffee (because this girl doesn't drink instant coffee).

A spare bed had thoughtfully been made up for Tweeny at no extra charge in the living room and she was more than a little excited to not have to share a cramped hotel room with us (and have her own TV).

The bedroom featured a gigantic bed with deliciously luxurious bedding and plenty of cupboard space for a longer stay (and an additional television!). I really appreciated the dark out blinds which are operated with a push of a button. Very fancy.

I loved the generous MOR products in the bathroom (the remains of which I may or may not have slipped into my bag at the end of the trip). It was light, bright and spacious with all three of us able to spill out the contents of our toiletry bags and it was complete with a washing machine and dryer.

THE VERDICT

Salamanca Wharf Hotel ticked all my accommodation boxes. It is a real treat for luxe loving urban families (couples or singles) wanting something much more than a chain offering. I really fell in love with the location and may have started scouring available real estate  right at the back of the hotel during our stay!

*We were lucky enough to stay as a guest of Salamanca Wharf Hotel on our first night of accommodation and we paid full price for our second night…it was worth every penny.
